The Village of Arlington Heights has experienced tremendous population growth in the 1950s and 1960s due to annexation and new development. In 1950, Arlington Heights' limits reached Thomas Street in the north and Central Road in the south, but by 1960 the annexation had expanded the borders to Dundee Road in the north and I-90 in the south. By 1990, the annexation had expanded the village border to Lake Cook Road and flooded other areas adjacent to the village.Arlington Heights was founded in the 1800s by Asa Danton, a Yankee stone carver. Asa's son, William Danton, was the first owner of this farming community, which was originally called "Danton Town". The town's name changed several times until 1874 when it officially became Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights is famous for the Arlington Park Racetrack and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, one of the largest book collections in the state.

The racecourse has a rich history. California millionaire Harry D. "Curley" Brown founded it in 1927 on a lot that used to be 12 farms. Camp MacDonald and two country clubs were founded in the 1930s. The track survived the Great Depression and World War II and then flourished in the golden age of racing. In 1981, the world's first million dollar race, the Arlington Million, took place in Arlington. The result of this race is immortalized in bronze at the top of the paddock, which houses a statue of jockey Bill Shoemaker, who rides John Henry and scores an impressive victory from behind, 40: 1 million dollars at the inauguration. ...

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library dates back to the late 1800s. It all started at the home of Miss Effie and Miss Lucy Shepard at 310 N. Danton Avenue, just a few hundred feet from the library's current location. 1926 - Elections finally make the library a true public library. Most recently, in 2012, renovations began at the library. The facilities have been redesigned to include an expanded popular materials area, smaller conference rooms, an expanded teen area, and an upgraded learning center with more computer and technology labs.
