The original inhabitants of the land located in Mount Prospect were Native Americans. The Yankees were the first American settlers in the area and the first to clear land and establish farms.

Over time the city diversified, and the town center began to develop. In 1917, it had 300 residents, and it lit up. The most incredible growth occurred during land speculation in the 1920s, followed by the suburban movement trend after World War II. The Baby Boom increased the population, and the Village of Mount Prospect began to expand.

In the early 1960s, the Mount Prospect business community took a significant step forward with the construction of Randhurst, the first air-conditioned indoor mall in the upper Midwest. Today, Randhurst Village is a bustling outdoor mixed-use center with national and regional retail stores, a state-of-the-art movie theater, office space, a 140-room hotel, and various restaurants. Another milestone in Village history was the Kensington Business Center's construction, which has been home to many local and international companies, such as NTN Bearing, Searle, Braun Manufacturing, Cummins-Allison Corp, CVS Caremark, and others.

The main novelty of the 1990s and 2000s was the reconstruction of the city center. Construction of several new buildings continues, changing the appearance of the city center.
