The roots of the Palatine date back to the 1830s, when settlers from New York and New England traveled west to claim the fertile grasslands, they had heard so much about. They followed Indian trails north and west from a settlement in Fort Dearborn called Chicago, from the Indian word, which means "wild onion place."

When the railway was built, a thriving settlement soon arose around this railway station, prompted by Joel Wood's vision, who in 1855 inspected, surveyed and laid out the village. Palatine was incorporated on April 2, 1866, and chartered by the state in 1869.
