History Of Rolling Meadows, IL
In 1836, Orrin Ford became the first landowner of the area that is now Rolling Meadows, claiming 160 acres of woodlands and rolling terrain. Other farming families soon followed. Many came from Vermont. In 1850, the community became part of Palatine Township.
H. D. "Curley" Brown purchased 1,000 acres of what would become Rolling Meadows In 1927. The goal was to build a golf course and an adjoining race track. In the early 1950s, Kimball Hill purchased the golf course land and began selling houses. Officials in nearby Arlington Heights protested, hoping to buy land for their purposes. But the prospective Kimball Hill homebuyers persuaded the Cook County Board to make zoning changes to allow Kimball Hill to continue building.
Rolling Meadows was incorporated in 1955, named after its Rolling terrain. The process of annexing the land for future development soon began. The city flourished in the 1950s and 1960s when businesses started coming to the area. Developers filled the area with apartment buildings. 35% of the structures in Rolling Meadows by the 1970s were multifamily dwellings.
