The History of Vernon Hills, IL

In 1851, W. D. Coon and Theodore Mills paved the way to the village's formation when they began a two-hundred-acre farm. In 1885 the railroad was established in the area, allowing farmers to move their crops. The community was mainly agricultural until the 1950s, when two developers, Quinn Hogan and Barney Loeb, purchased land to build houses and a golf course. They called the corporation Vernon Hills, managing to built 24 homes and several apartment buildings. Vernon Hills was incorporated in 1958, with 123 inhabitants. In 1960, the Vernon Hills Country Club was built. Tourists and potential home buyers stayed at the hotel, where they received a golf club membership over the weekend.

There are some big companies in the area. While some of these are not headquartered in Vernon Hills, they are based out of Vernon Hills. Some are headquartered in the nearby suburb of Lincolnshire. Some of the most popular companies are CDW, Zebra Technologies, American Hotel Register Company, and Rust-Oleum Corporation. The village has a station on Metra's North Central Service. The station offers daily rail transport from Antioch to Chicago Union Station and back.
